The form
In English, without your browser's automatic translation.
Timing
Apply up to 90 days before arrival.
Mistakes
Fees are never refunded. A typo found after payment means a new application and a new fee.

Criminal record certificate

Your criminal record certificate: the Führungszeugnis

Berlin's checklist says it plainly: the certificate comes from your country of nationality or from the country where you file.

Which certificate

One certificate, not two. Living in Germany, the German Führungszeugnis meets the rule whatever your nationality. EU and UK nationals can order the European version, which includes their home country's record. How the certificate works

Already in three languages

Your personal data and the “no entry” line are printed in German, English and French.

EU and UK nationals

The Europäisches Führungszeugnis includes the record of your home member state. It can take up to 20 working days.

No legalisation needed

The Federal Office of Justice offers an Überbeglaubigung (€25, paper only) and the Thai embassy a legalisation (€15 per stamp). No German post asks for either for the DTV.

No apostille

Thailand joined the Apostille Convention on 30 June 2026, and it applies to Thailand only from 28 February 2027. Until then an apostille is not valid for Thailand, and no post asks for one on the DTV upload.

Step by step

  1. Order the ordinary certificate

The private one, sent to you. The version for an authority goes straight to a German authority and never reaches you.

  2. At the Bürgeramt or online

In person or in writing at your Meldebehörde (Bürgeramt or Rathaus), or online at fuehrungszeugnis.bund.de with the eID function of your ID card, electronic residence permit or EU eID card and an NFC smartphone (AusweisApp).

  3. Pay €13

    Online, by credit card.

  4. Paper or PDF

The paper certificate is posted to you only, never emailed or faxed. Since 1 October 2026 it is also issued as a PDF in your BundID mailbox, usually within a few hours. The Federal Office of Justice sets no fixed processing time and warns it can take longer.

  5. Check the age for your post

Frankfurt: no older than 6 months. Munich: no older than 3 months. Berlin sets none; we suggest one issued within the last 3 months.

What the German posts do not say

Two questions the posts' pages leave open. We do not guess: ask your post before you file.

  • How old the certificate may be in Berlin

Berlin sets no age. Frankfurt and Munich do, so we suggest one issued within the last 3 months.

  • The digital Führungszeugnis

Issued as a PDF since 1 October 2026. The posts' DTV pages, checked on 2 October 2026, do not mention it.

Ask the post

Berlin answers status questions at visa@thaiembassy.de. Frankfurt and Munich: through their own pages, Frankfurt and Munich.

Questions

DTV from Germany: common questions

Which German consulate handles Bavaria?

The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Munich. It covers Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

Which post covers North Rhine-Westphalia?

The Consulate-General in Frankfurt, which covers Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Thuringia. Berlin covers all the others.

Do I need a Führungszeugnis or a certificate from my home country?

One of the two. Berlin's checklist asks for a certificate “from the country of nationality or the country where the application is submitted”. EU and UK nationals can order the European Führungszeugnis, which includes the home country's record. Read the field note on the certificate.

Is the digital Führungszeugnis accepted?

It exists since 1 October 2026, but none of the three posts' DTV pages mentions it. Ask your post before you rely on it.

How long does a DTV take in Germany?

A decision within 15 working days, plus 15 if the post asks for more documents. Berlin accepts applications up to 90 days before arrival.

Can I file from Thailand while living in Germany?

Not with Berlin: you must be in Germany to submit and pay, and should stay until the decision. The rule since 31 August 2026 also requires proof of permanent residence in the country where you file.
