DTV visa extension: 180 more days, once per entry.

5 min readIndependent · France-based

A DTV gives you 180 days per entry. Once per entry, you can ask immigration in Thailand for up to 180 more, which takes a single stay to 360 days. It is a counter visit, not a new visa, and it has a fixed fee. What it does not have is a published list of documents for the DTV - so here is what is written, and what is not.

The rule, in the embassy’s words

The Royal Thai Embassy in London sets it out most clearly. The DTV is valid 5 years for multiple entries, with a period of stay of 180days per entry, and an extension of stay of “one time for a period not exceeding 180days per entry”.

  • Once per entryOne extension for each stay. A second extension on the same entry is not available.
  • Up to 180 days“Not exceeding”: the officer grants the stay, and the stamp in your passport is the date that counts.

The rule that came in on 31 August 2026 changed where a DTV application is filed. It did not touch extensions inside Thailand.

Where, how, and what it costs

You apply at an immigration office in Thailand, before your permitted stay ends, on form TM.7 - the application for extension of temporary stay, named in the Board of Investment’s FAQ. The Immigration Bureau’s fee schedule sets the fee at 1,900 THB per application. It is paid at the office, not on the e-Visa portal, and it has nothing to do with the embassy fee you paid for the visa itself.

One thing comes free with it. The Immigration Bureau counts the first application for an extension of stay as your 90-day notification, so the next report is due 90 days after it.

What the official pages do not say

We read the embassy pages, the Immigration Bureau’s fee schedule and its notification page. None of them lists the documents an immigration office expects for a DTV extension. Three points are not stated anywhere we looked:

  • The document list. The form and the fee are published; anything beyond your passport is set by the office. Whether it asks to see your financial evidence or your activity again is not stated.
  • The earliest day you can apply. No page we read gives one.
  • Whether you need a re-entry permit to travel during an extension. The DTV is a multiple-entry visa; no official source says whether a holder also needs one.

The office that covers where you live is the authority on all three. Ask it a few weeks before your stay ends, not on the last day.

After 360 days

The London page is explicit: after the maximum stay of 180 days plus 180, the holder must leave Thailand and re-enter the country with the same DTV. Each entry opens a new 180-day stay, within the visa’s 5 years. That is how the visa is built, not a workaround, and the officer at the border still decides each entry.

Where we fit

We prepare DTV applications; our work ends when yours is submitted. We do not file extensions and we do not go to the immigration office with you. What we can tell you, before you apply for the visa, is how its 180 plus 180 days fit the stay you have in mind.

The short version

One extension per entry, up to 180 days, form TM.7, 1,900 THB, at an immigration office in Thailand before your stay ends. No published DTV document list: ask your office. After 360 days, leave and re-enter on the same visa.

Common questions

Can I get a DTV visa extension?
Yes, once per entry, for up to 180 days. You apply at an immigration office in Thailand before your 180-day stay ends, on form TM.7, with a fee of 1,900 THB.
How much does a DTV extension cost?
1,900 THB, the Immigration Bureau's fee for an application to extend a temporary stay. It is paid at the immigration office, not on the e-Visa portal, and it is separate from the embassy fee you paid for the visa.
Can I extend a DTV twice in a row?
No. The extension is once per entry. After 180 days plus 180, the Royal Thai Embassy in London says the holder must leave Thailand and re-enter with the same DTV.
Did the 31 August 2026 rule change the extension?
No. The rule changed where a DTV application is filed. Extensions inside Thailand are unchanged.
