DTV visa requirements: the full checklist

Who can apply, the documents the official e-Visa portal asks for since 31 August 2026, the money, the criminal record certificate, and where posts add their own lines. In the ministry's own words where it matters.

Or the equivalent, over the last 3 months. Or a sponsorship letter.

Working on a DTV
“the DTV is a special kind of tourist visa in Thailand, which means that holders are prohibited from obtaining a Thai work permit and working for companies in Thailand or performing freelance work for Thai clients.”

Royal Thai Embassy, Budapest

That is one embassy's wording; we found no ministry-level sentence on it. Singapore puts it the same way: “Remote Working is to conduct business for company abroad not in Thailand”.

“After the maximum stay of 180 days + 180 days, the visa holders need to depart Thailand and re-enter the country with the same DTV visa within the visa's validity date.”
Royal Thai Embassy, London

Who can apply

The three DTV categories

The e-Visa portal names three purposes. London numbers them DTV1, DTV2 and DTV3. You file under one.

  1. DTV1

    Workcation (digital nomad/remote worker/foreign talent/freelancer)

You work remotely for an employer or clients outside Thailand. The portal spells it workcation; we write workation.

    The workation category

  2. DTV2

Thai soft power-related activities (e.g., Muay Thai, Thai culinary training, and medical treatment)

You come for an activity: a Muay Thai course, cooking classes, sport training, medical treatment, seminars, music festivals. Every official list says “e.g.” or “such as”: none is closed.

    The soft power category

  3. DTV3

Spouse and children under 20 years old of DTV visa holders

You join someone who already holds a DTV. Children must be under 20.

Spouses and children on one file

Muay Thai, at Los Angeles. The consulate asks for “an official letter of acceptance and support from Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) as well as other documents from a boxing gym which has been certified by SAT”. Other posts do not say this; ask yours.

Age

No official page we checked states a minimum age for the main applicant. The only age in the official wording is the dependants' limit: children under 20. Some posts set their own rules for minors' documents.

Where you file

Since 31 August 2026, only at the Thai post covering your country of nationality, or a country where you hold permanent residence. A visit to a third country no longer qualifies. Where to apply from.

Document checklist

The DTV document checklist, in the portal's words

Six lines, the same for every category except the fifth. This is the e-Visa portal's list, updated after 31 August 2026.

Retired on 31 August 2026

Document indicating current location

Applications submitted before 31 August 2026 are processed under the previous requirements.

  1. Passport

“Biodata page of Passport or Travel Document”

The portal states no validity period. Washington, Los Angeles, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore and Paris ask for at least 6 months.

  2. Photograph

“Photograph taken within the last six months”

A recent colour photo. Upload it as the portal asks.

  3. Proof of permanent residenceSince 31 August 2026

“Proof of permanent residence in the country where the application is submitted”

It replaced the document indicating your current location. What counts is set post by post: Washington names a valid U.S. visa or Permanent Resident Card, London the UK indefinite leave to remain or Irish long-term residency, Paris the most recent tax return.

  4. Financial evidence

“Financial evidences: (1) last-3-month bank statement(s) from any bank(s) with a minimum balance of 500,000 THB or equivalent; or (2) sponsorship letter(s)”

How posts convert it is below.

  5. The category document

“Employment contract or employment certificate in their country or professional portfolio showcasing digital nomad, remote worker, foreign talent or freelancer status”

That is the workation line. Soft power and dependants have their own, below.

  6. Criminal record certificateSince 31 August 2026

“Certificate of criminal record clearance from the country of nationality or the country where the application is submitted”

One certificate, from one of the two countries. Not both.

By category

Documents for each DTV category

The fifth line of the checklist, category by category. The official wording first, then what some posts add.

Workation

e-Visa portal

  • “Employment contract or employment certificate in their country or professional portfolio showcasing digital nomad, remote worker, foreign talent or freelancer status”

Posts add

  • Washington and Los Angeles, for non-US citizens: a letter of proof of employment, hand-signed by the HR department or a manager. Both write “we don't accept pay stubs”.
  • Self-employed, at the same two posts: a business licence or registration showing your name.
  • Singapore: a company letter allowing remote work, three months of payslips and an ACRA business profile.

Soft power

e-Visa portal

  • “Proof of confirmation to attend the activity or letter of appointment from hospital/medical center”

Posts add

  • Washington and Los Angeles: “Letter of acceptance from institute or company organizing activities, letter of appointment from hospital/medical center”.
  • Los Angeles, for Muay Thai: a letter from the Sports Authority of Thailand and documents from a gym it has certified.

Spouse and children

e-Visa portal

  • “DTV visa of the DTV holder”
  • “Proof of relationship to the DTV visa holder (e.g., a copy of marriage certificate/ birth certificate/ certificate of adoption)”

Posts add

  • Washington: the holder's government ID, passport biodata page and DTV approval.
  • Washington and Los Angeles, for minors under 20: birth certificate, the parents' marriage certificate or a notarised sole-custody court order, the parents' IDs, and a notarised consent letter if the child travels alone.
  • Dependants also send the common lines: passport, photo, residence, money and the certificate.

Financial evidence

500,000 THB: how each post reads it

The portal asks for 500,000 THB or the equivalent, on bank statements covering the last 3 months, or a sponsorship letter. Each post converts the figure into its own currency, and some round it up.

500,000 THBor equivalent, over the last 3 months

Sponsorship

Every central source accepts a sponsorship letter instead of your own statements. Posts narrow it: Paris accepts a sponsor only for minors and accompanying DTV applicants; Washington and Los Angeles accept a family bank statement with proof of relationship.

Certificate and translations

The criminal record certificate and translations

Every applicant has needed a certificate since 31 August 2026. How recent it must be, and what language it may be in, depends on the post.

One certificate

Issued by your country of nationality or by the country where you file. Not both. It comes from your own authorities, not from us, and it can take weeks: it usually sets your timeline. How to get it.

How recent, post by post

Washington (FBI certificate)
3 months
Los Angeles (FBI certificate)
3 months
London (ACRO or Irish police certificate)
6 months
Paris
3 months
Frankfurt
6 months
Munich
3 months
Berlin
Not stated

New York writes “Must be issued by State or FBI”. Washington lets minors under 16 use the main applicant's FBI certificate. Where no age is stated, one issued within the last three months is the safe choice.

Language and translations

  • English or Thai

Documents must be in English or Thai. Ho Chi Minh City: “Official translation issued by certified translation offices is highly recommended.”

  • Certified and notarised

Washington, Los Angeles and London want documents issued outside Thailand and their own country to come with “certified English translations and notarized by an Embassy or Ministry of Foreign Affairs only”. Tokyo says the same of financial and employment documents. Singapore asks for translations notarised by a notary or a diplomatic mission.

  • No apostille yet

Thailand joined the Apostille Convention on 30 June 2026; it applies to Thailand only from 28 February 2027. No post asks for one on the DTV upload.

What posts add

Where posts differ from the portal

Each post publishes its own page, and some have not caught up with the rule. Follow your own post's current checklist, and when it asks for more than the portal, send it.

  • The US posts still list the old line

Washington (updated 10 September 2026) and Los Angeles (1 October 2026) ask for both a “Document indicating current location” and proof of permanent residence. New York (2 September 2026) also still asks for a current-location document. If your post lists both, send both.

  • Singapore's text is partly out of date

Its DTV pages (updated 7 September 2026) still say “Document indicating current location”, and show the criminal record certificate only in an image. Singapore grants the DTV only to Singapore citizens and permanent residents.

  • Pages from before the rule

Ottawa, Canberra, Wellington, Sydney and the Kuala Lumpur checklist were last updated before 31 August 2026. Their fees may stand; do not rely on their document lists.

Questions

DTV visa requirements: common questions

What are the requirements for the DTV visa?

Your passport, a photograph taken within the last six months, proof of permanent residence in the country where you file, bank statements for the last 3 months with at least 500,000 THB or the equivalent (or a sponsorship letter), a criminal record certificate, and the document for your category: employment proof, an activity confirmation, or the DTV of the person you join.

How much money do I need in the bank for a DTV?

500,000 THB or the equivalent, on statements covering the last 3 months, or a sponsorship letter. Posts convert it differently: Washington writes $16,000, London £12,000, Singapore about SGD 20,000, Munich about €12,500, and Paris asks for €15,000 every month.

Do I need a criminal record certificate for the DTV?

Yes, since 31 August 2026, every applicant. One certificate, from your country of nationality or from the country where you file. Posts set how recent it must be: 3 months at Washington, Los Angeles, Paris and Munich, 6 months at London and Frankfurt.

Is there a minimum age for the DTV visa?

No official page we checked states a minimum age for the main applicant. The official wording sets one age: dependent children must be under 20. Ask your post if this concerns you.

Can I apply for a DTV from a country I am only visiting?

Not since 31 August 2026. The application is accepted only by the Thai post covering your country of nationality or a country where you hold permanent residence. Applications submitted before that date are processed under the previous requirements.

Can I work in Thailand on a DTV?

Not for Thai employers or Thai clients. The Budapest embassy writes that holders are prohibited from obtaining a Thai work permit and from working for companies in Thailand or doing freelance work for Thai clients. Remote work for an employer or clients abroad is what the workation category covers.

Do my documents need to be translated?

They must be in English or Thai. Several posts, including Washington, Los Angeles, London and Tokyo, want certified English translations, notarised, for documents issued outside Thailand and their own country. Check your post's page.
