DTV Thailand
Field notes·Edition 02

Where to apply from: Jakarta, Vientiane, or home.

Consulate choice is the most under-discussed DTV decision. Document tolerance, processing speed, and the government fee all vary by location. The cheapest move is rarely the closest move, and the closest move is rarely the safest. Here is how we think about the question on a real file.

Two questions to answer first

Before naming a consulate, two facts about the applicant decide most of the shortlist.

  • Timing. If the applicant needs the stamp within four to six weeks, the regional consulates in Southeast Asia are usually the realistic shortlist. If three months is acceptable, home-country filing widens the field.
  • Paper trail. A remote worker with a US-payroll contract, a freelancer with twelve months of invoices, and a Muay Thai student with an enrolment letter are filing very different cases. Some consulates are friendlier to one profile than to another.

Vientiane, Laos

The workhorse of the regional shortlist. The Royal Thai Embassy in Vientiane processes a steady volume of DTV applications, sits a short flight or overland trip from Bangkok, and is generally predictable on document requirements. For applicants already in Southeast Asia with a complete file, this is the default we benchmark other consulates against.

The trade-off is volume. Slots can be tight, and a poorly organised file does not get the benefit of the doubt. Applicants who arrive with a thin evidence pack and a hopeful attitude are politely sent away.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Cambodia’s capital is the obvious alternate to Vientiane and a comparable regional option. Many applicants find Phnom Penh stricter on missing or inconsistent documents, which cuts both ways: a clean file goes through cleanly, and a file with a soft spot in it is more likely to be flagged. We tend to route applicants here when their evidence pack is genuinely tight and we want the discipline of a careful officer.

Jakarta, Indonesia

The Royal Thai Embassy in Jakarta handles DTV applications for remote workers already in Indonesia on tourist stays. The advantage is logistical: you file from the country you are already in, with no extra flight and no extra accommodation. The file still has to meet the published checklist in full - logistics do not soften the paperwork.

For a remote worker with a clean twelve-month income trail and a stable Indonesian address, Jakarta is often the cleanest move. For an applicant arriving from Europe with a borrowed hotel address, it is rarely the right answer.

Your home country

Filing in the applicant’s country of residence is the predictable choice. Documents are in the local language, bank statements come from a known institution, and the consulate reads the file in its familiar form. Processing is usually slower than a regional consulate but the failure modes are easier to anticipate.

This is the route we recommend for applicants with strong home-country paperwork, dependents to file alongside the principal, or any complication that benefits from unhurried treatment.

Wellington, the outlier

The Royal Thai Embassy in Wellington is a documented outlier on government fees, pricing significantly above the standard band that applies almost everywhere else. Applicants based in New Zealand are usually quoted separately, and where it makes sense logistically, some file from Australia or from a regional Southeast Asian consulate instead.

The Wellington fee is not a hidden margin on the agency side. It is the embassy’s posted price, paid direct to the consulate. We pass it through at exact cost, and we say so on the quote.

The short rule

Match the consulate to the file, not to the airport. A strong remote-worker file with an Indonesian address files cleanly in Jakarta. A tight Muay Thai dossier holds up well in Phnom Penh. A family file with dependents almost always belongs in the home country. The DTV is approved or refused on paperwork, and consulate choice is the quiet multiplier on how that paperwork lands.
