Lane 3 of 3 · Spouse and children
DTV visa for spouse and children: the family lane.
For the spouse and the children under 20 of a DTV holder. Each person files their own application, tied to the holder's visa. What the posts ask for, and what none of them says.

Who qualifies
Spouse and children under 20, in the official wording
The third DTV category. Every source words it the same way.
“Spouse and children under 20 years old of DTV visa holders”
Thai e-Visa portal
“DTV3 - Spouse and children under 20 years old of DTV visa holders”
Royal Thai Embassy, London
“accompany their family member (only spouse and children under 20) who has DTV”
Royal Thai Consulate-General, Ho Chi Minh City
- Age
- Children must be under 20. No source says on which date that is measured, or what happens when a child turns 20 during the visa's validity. Ask the post.
- Adopted children
- Covered: the portal lists a certificate of adoption as proof of relationship.
- How many
- No limit is stated for the DTV. The portal caps another visa, the LTR, at 4 dependants per holder; nothing similar appears for the DTV.
Who files first
Most embassies ask for the main applicant's issued DTV, so the main applicant usually files first.
Ho Chi Minh City is the exception in its wording: it writes “main DTV applicant/holder”
and asks for the DTV page “(if applicable)”
, which suggests it accepts the files together. No other post says whether a family can file at the same time.
What this lane adds
Two documents on top of the common base.
The holder's DTVEvery post
The portal asks for the
“DTV visa of the DTV holder”
. Washington adds the holder's government ID and passport biodata page; Paris the holder's passport page.Proof of relationshipEvery post
A marriage certificate, a birth certificate or a certificate of adoption. Paris also accepts the livret de famille.
At Ho Chi Minh CityOne post
Proof of relationship, a copy of the holder's passport (data page, and DTV page if applicable), the marriage certificate for a spouse, the birth certificate for a child, the adoption certificate for an adopted child.
At Los AngelesOne post
Its page lists proof of relationship only inside the family bank statement line, and does not list the holder's DTV for this category. Probably an omission; we would include the holder's DTV anyway.
Money
Financial evidence for a spouse or child
The common base includes 500,000 THB or a sponsorship letter. How it applies to a dependant depends on the post.
- e-Visa portal and London
- Financial evidence is listed for this category like any other. London: no less than £12,000 (500,000 THB).
- Washington and Los Angeles
- A family bank statement is accepted:
“In case of submitting a family bank statement, proof of relationship (i.e. birth certificate, marriage certificate) must be provided.”
- Paris
- A sponsor is accepted only for minors and accompanying DTV applicants, so a dependant may rely on the holder's statements with a sponsorship letter.
Per person or per family?
No post says whether 500,000 THB is needed once per family or for each person. We do not guess. Ask your post before you assemble the statements.
Every applicant · this lane too
Then the common base.
Each spouse and child sends the same common lines as the holder, in their own application.
- Passport biodata page
- Photograph taken within six months
- Proof of permanent residence
- Financial evidence or sponsorship
- Criminal record certificate
Changed on 31 August 2026
Proof of permanent residence replaced the current-location document, and the criminal record certificate was added, for every applicant. The portal sets no age exception for the certificate; only Washington publishes one, for children under 16. The rule in full.
- What you get
- Five years, multiple entry, 180 days per entry, extendable once by another 180 days.
- Government fee
- $380 to $475 at most Western posts, $260 to $340 from several Asian ones. Your card, direct to the embassy. Full table.
Minors
Extra documents for children
Some posts publish their own list for minors. Where yours does not, ask it.
Washington and Los Angeles, under 20
“Copy of a birth certificate”
“Copy of parent's marriage certificate, in case of sole custody notarized copy of the court order, must be provided”
“Copy of passports or ID of mother and father/ legal guardian”
“Original letter of notarized consent for the minor to travel abroad from mother and father/ legal guardian if the applicant is traveling alone.”
London, under 16
“Full birth certificate showing the parents' names, Parent's passport or ID, Parent's council tax bills or utility bills, Parent's recent official UK/Ireland bank statement, showing their name and address”
The criminal record certificate
“Minors under 16 years of age may use the FBI Certificate of the main sponsor for their application.”
Washington's exception, the only one published. The portal asks every applicant for a certificate, with no age exception. Elsewhere, ask your post.
Civil documents
Translations, same-sex spouses and schooling
The questions families ask most, with what the posts actually say.
Translations
Washington, Los Angeles and London: documents issued outside Thailand and their own country need
“certified English translations and notarized by an Embassy or Ministry of Foreign Affairs only”
. Ho Chi Minh City: English or Thai, official translation highly recommended. Singapore: translated into Thai or English and notarised. Paris's DTV page asks for no translation of the acte de mariage, acte de naissance or livret de famille. No post asks for an apostille.Same-sex spouses
The DTV asks for a marriage certificate. Thailand's Marriage Equality Act came into effect on 23 January 2025. No embassy's DTV page mentions same-sex spouses, civil partnerships or a PACS, so ask the post before filing.
A child at an international school
Paris: a child enrolled in an international school needs a Non-Immigrant ED visa, not a DTV. No other post says so; ask yours.
One account, one application each
Washington: people travelling together
“may apply under one account”
, but“a visa application is for each individual”
. How to apply, step by step.

Questions
DTV for spouse and children: common questions
Can my spouse and children get a DTV?
Yes. The DTV's third category covers the spouse and the children under 20 of a DTV holder. Each person files their own application with the holder's DTV and proof of relationship, plus the common documents.
Does the main applicant need the DTV before the family applies?
At most posts, yes in practice: they ask for the holder's issued DTV. Ho Chi Minh City's wording suggests it accepts the files together. No other post says so.
Does each family member need 500,000 THB?
No post says. The portal and London list financial evidence for dependants; Washington and Los Angeles accept a family bank statement with proof of relationship; Paris accepts a sponsor for minors and accompanying applicants. Whether the amount is per person or per family is not stated: ask your post.
Do children need a criminal record certificate?
The portal asks every applicant, with no age exception. Washington lets children under 16 use the main applicant's FBI certificate. Other posts do not say.
Can a same-sex spouse get a DTV?
The DTV asks for a marriage certificate, and Thailand's Marriage Equality Act came into effect on 23 January 2025. No embassy says how it treats a civil partnership or a PACS; ask the post before filing.
Is there a limit on the number of dependants?
None is stated for the DTV.
My child will attend an international school in Thailand. DTV or ED?
Paris says a child enrolled in an international school needs a Non-Immigrant ED visa, not a DTV. Other posts do not say; ask yours.
